History of the Somerset-Hunterdon USBC Association

Back in the late 1940's a group of men established a board of directors that became the Somerset County Bowling Association.

Over the next 75 years this association has transitioned with the times and evolved into what is known today as the Somerset Hunterdon USBC Association Inc.

The Annual Championship Tournament was first held in 1951 and has continued every year since. The only deviation was when the local association hosted the New Jersey State Tournament, a total of 6 times between 1951 and 2007.

Back in the glory days of bowling there was at one point a total of 16 bowling establishments between this bi-county association, 5 in Hunterdon and 11 in Somerset County with over 260 lane beds and more than 6,000 sanctioned male bowlers. Establishments ranging from just 2 lanes at the Bound Brook Elks to our largest centers with 48 lanes being Strike N Spare and Blue Star Lanes. Today we are down to 2 establishments, West Hunterdon Lanes and Bowlero Green Brook with a total of 60 lane beds and just over 475 bowlers, both male and female.

The SHUSBCA has also had the honor of establishing some milestones in bowling, not only locally but also nationally. Our long-time secretary Donald Robert took office in the 1948-49 bowling season and remained as it's secretary until the end of the 1998-99 season, a total of 50 years, with this, Don became a member of a very elite group of men (3) throughout the nation at the time who have served their local bowlers for 50 or more years.

When this association began, it was known as the Somerset County Bowling Association even though it served two counties. This name was changed in 1983 when we became known as the Somerset-Hunterdon Men's Bowling Association. A name that was kept for 10 years, until the National body allowed female to join the ABC and we again changed our name to the Somerset-Hunterdon Bowling Association. Our latest name change came in 2016 with the merger of women's and men's associations to the Somerset-Hunterdon USBC Association Inc.

The Somerset-Hunterdon Women's board was founded in 1959, Barbara Perrine was the President of the Somerset-Hunterdon Women's Association for 54 years.

What the future holds is anyone's guess, but as a very adaptable organization, we the members of the now SHUSBCA will continue to strive to be the best group of bowlers and dedicated leaders in the sport.
